Media and subterranean rescues

An On the Media transcript from 2003 has some useful namechecks.

Floyd Collins inspired Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole, of course. (The journo who reported the Collins case, William Burke Miller of the Louisville Courier Journal snagged a Pulitzer for his pains, it seems.)

But, talking of movie connections, there's also Kathy Fiscus, a little girl who in 1949 fell into a well near Los Angeles. Her story featured in Woody Allen's Radio Days.

(I remembered there being a scene in the flick featuring the dad who's irate with his kid, and then turns on the radio, hear about the girl and decides to be grateful his kid is safe. I'd no idea the story 'broadcast' was based on fact.)

Some other cases are mentioned.
