The Dem mountain in Congress
The simplest of tables at the Cook Political Report shows what leverage the apparently slimmish GOP margins represent.
For example, in the Senate, 33 seats will be contested in 2006, of which 18 have Dem incumbents (including the Dem-caucusing Jeffords). But 40 of 55 GOP seats stay in the bag.
Cook rates 9 GOP seats as solid - leaving a gap of precisely one seat to reach the GOP magic number. With their solid 8 seats, at 35, the Dems are 16 seats short!
Sixteen to one: I like those odds...
