Astroturf down to Bentsen, apparently

According to a fascinating site, there is a documented first usage (in 1986):
Issue-oriented newspaper advertisements featuring clip-out coupons are often designed to show that the sponsor's goal has grass-roots support. But the "grass roots is AstroTurf in many cases, artificial turf," says Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas.

And - a favourite here - anonymice - first appeared in print, it seems, under the byline of one Jim Slotek, rather than that of Jack Shafer.
