Lawrence Summers' aper├žu on women and science - total cost: $50 million - ranks with the notorious British example of Gerald Ratner's reference to one of his company's products as total crap as a dire lesson against loose lips.

Apparently, Summers said at the time that
in his talk he repeated several times: ''I'm going to provoke you."
