New York Times: national circulation pays off

In the sense, one reads, that New York circulation dropped by 2% in the six months to March, while national circulation increased by 2% - in both case, 5% for the Sunday edition. Thus both weekday and Sunday editions of the NYT scraped a tiny gain in circulation whilst other big names saw slides continuing.

Quite how that translates into revenues and earnings, I'm not sure. (For instance, you'd expect that the marginal profit from the sale of a copy printed out of town would be lower than a metro copy, because of scale effects, competing for ad sales against established home-town papers, etc.)
