Schiavo: sanity from the Florida Senate, of all places

You might expect Maximum Bob. But, as if to give a lesson to their more exalted colleagues in Washington, Florida senators have declined to add a sideshow to the Schiavo circus.

Sen Daniel Webster's SB 804 [1] was rejected on passage by 21-18.

Now, the state of the parties in the Florida Senate is 26-14 in favour of the GOP [2]. Of the Dems, 12 voted against the bill, one - Al Lawson - voted for, and one did not vote. Republicans racked up 9 votes against:

Alexander
Argenziano
Bennett
Carlton
Dockery
Jones
King
Lynn
Saunders

More joy in heaven...

Meanwhile, the Governor has another stunt:
Jeb Bush and the state's social services agency filed a petition in state court to take custody of Schiavo and, presumably, reconnect her feeding tube. It cites new allegations of neglect and challenges Schiavo's diagnosis as being in a persistent vegetative state. The request is based on the opinion of a neurologist working for the state who observed Schiavo at her bedside but did not conduct an examination of her.

Better than Frist's VT diagnosis technique, but...

  1. The details of the bill are hardly germane: whatever the intentions, it would have operated as a Schiavo stunt.

  2. I've commented before on the lack of basic online information about state legislatures. And on the absurdly feeble performance of Google and the other search engines in retrieving statistical information. How many Dems in the TN house? How many hours to find out online?

I manage to find out the party strengths in the FL senate via a list of member's websites. Jesus!

Doesn't help that the damned roll call page doesn't include party labels.
