Mbeki and the witch doctors

Innocence-wise, Tom DeLay is like a new-born fluffy kitten [1] compared to the boss of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki.

Not only does he refuse to acknowledge that HIV causes AIDS, it seems that he had legislation passed which enables witch-doctors to get government money for handing out their mumbo-jumbo ju-ju 'remedies'.

No doubt, they're a good deal cheaper than anti-retrovirals (even those of Third World manufacture), and - my suspicion - these witch-doctors act something like precinct captains for the ANC, keeping the voters in line.

Mostly, it's about saving one ugly face.

  1. OK, so they're born soggy...

The AIDS-related annual death rate in South Africa is running at around 220,000 - a good slug more than the tsunami accounted for, and that was a one-shot deal.
