Frenchman v Bush? Would it had been Babar!

A 6,000 word review article in NYROB on the most famous French elephant. Whereas the dominant image of French society (as laid off on poor old John Kerry) is cosmpolitan bohemian intellectualism and sexual licence, Babar represents the element of haut-bourgeois respectability, of the middling bureaucrat or bank manager, stalwarts of the Third Republic, not to mention Vichy...

Which is not to say that Babar wouldn't have been tempted by a cinq à sept with some doe-eyed, soft-hided calf; but he would surely have arranged matters with more discretion than Blunkett the Bird Bandit.
