Israeli strike on Iranian oil in prospect?
The Mother of All Pre-emption: an Israeli Air Force strike against Iranian nuclear installations (the Bushehr reactor?) in the style of the 1981 destruction of the Iraqi reactor at Osiraq (aka Osirak).
It's connect-the-dots on acid: the story writes itself. So, naturally, I'm sceptical.
To judge from what I've seen of the coverage, the effect (more, I suspect, by accident than by design) is something of a Mutt and Jeff: on the one hand, Israeli tub-thumping, on the other, analysts with plausible reasons, technical and political, why such an attack is unlikely.
A selection: this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this and this.
John Bolton from State, visiting Israel, got in the party spirit, according to a Jerusalem Post piece:
President [George W.] Bush is determined to try and find a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the problem of Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons. But we are determined that they are not going to achieve a nuclear weapons capability.
Love that But.
