Daniel Okrent back on the clock - kinda

The Zaphod Beeblebrox [1] of newspaper ombudsmankind yesterday gave us the ultimate in vanity publishing: the self-interview [2].

Bob Somerby is incandescent. (Despite years of documenting examples of more or less defective media coverage of US politics, he seems constantly surprised at finding new examples.)

My theory (March 5), developed in the course of the saga over the veracity of the Peter Landesman sex slaves article The Girls Next Door, was that Okrent was cultivating a sort of Scarlet Pimpernel (or, perhaps, Zorro) disguise, posing as languorous, whimsical and ineffectual, holding his powers in reserve for El Gordo, a case on which he had sufficient traction and evidence to slice the guts out of the Times news operation as it so richly deserves.

If so, yesterday's article can be accounted a piece of rank over-acting!

(Earlier Plawg pieces on Okrent - including the Judith Miller saga, of course.)

  1. Known to say
I am so cool, you could keep a side of meat in me for a month.
  2. I infer that this is not his first as Times ombud. I have no recollection of one, though.
