The New York Times' OxyContin problem

From the indispensable Romenesko, what looks like another sorry failure of the editorial process at the Gray Lady.

The STATS site -
we check the facts and figures behind the news
- offers a lengthy history of what looks like another wilful refusal on the part of NYT eds to let caution get in the way of a good story.

The real problem with the STATS piece is not the piece - which looks excellent, at first skim - but the fact that all the NYT articles it criticises have disappeared behind the pay-wall. (Don't you hate that?)

The Times oh so reluctantly apologised for its Iraqi WMD Horlicks (the Plawg passim) - nothing doing over OxyContin, though. Yet.
