Those two-term Dems...
Blogospherical Dems with PMT - permanent menstrual tension - over the coverage of Great White Hope Kerry in particular and the Democratic Party in general may find rant-worthy a pre-Convention piece in the Knoxville News Sentinel (July 23), which includes the following:
Clinton is one of only three Democrats in the 20th century to win re-election, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt being the others.
The implication is that, by contrast, tons of GOP presidents got themselves re-elected in the same period. Whereas, by my reckoning, their number is also three: Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan. (McKinley was re-elected in 1900 - but, to eliminate him from the reckoning, I'd take the strict view that the century started on January 1 1901!)
With those who served more than four 20th century years without being re-elected, one finds a similar 50:50 split: Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman each managed around seven years; Calvin Coolidge and Lyndon Johnson around five. All the rest made just one full term or less.
