Stupidity and the Pentagon chain of command - now Sanchez?

WaPo today reports that the lawyer for one of the Abu Ghraib accused testified at a military hearing (of unspecified status) that Lt-Gen Ricardo Sanchez was physically present during some of the alleged abuses.

Now, whether the accused's testimony on the point is true or not is one of those archetypal jury questions of which I steer well clear. My guess is, it's not.

But, if it is, one has to marvel at the monstrous combination of arrogance and stupidity that would take a three-star general to a monkey-house like Abu Ghraib (for which he is equally responsible, but in the sort of diffuse, bureaucratic way that lends itself to cover-up or pardon) in the first place; but, for the guy actually to witness the ghastly pantomime?

A test for the wall of silence...
