Wise words from IF Stone

Gadfly of US adminstrations for several decades and a kinda-sorta proto-blogger [1], Stone offers a watchword for journos and readers alike:
Every government is run by liars and nothing they say should be believed.

Now, there is plenty of room for disputes on the detail; but as a prudential guide to stance and action, I reckon it passes muster.

Note - for instance - that he is not saying that everything a government says is untrue. (Which clearly would be incorrect.) But that nothing should be taken on trust.

  1. Last mentioned here on March 6 in a piece on fellow gadfly George Seldes.
