Pollyanna works for US News, it seems...

A surprisingly upbeat assessment of the state of play on campus speech codes (via Erin O'Connor).

The progress made so far is welcome. But there are thousands of public colleges amenable to the First Amendment: and my suspicion, based on speech code stories that I've read, is that at the heart of most of them is a similar level of fanaticism against free speech as was found in the 1950s Deep South against desegregation.

They will fight college by college; and only a government campaign of law enforcement can beat that. (I suggested (January 30) that the remit of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice be extended to the enforcement of First Amendment Rights.)

Bake sales are fine: countrywide, Federal marshals with subpoenas would tend to be more effective, I fancy.
