OK to flip? Morals of photo tampering

Go back the last few weeks of Romenesko, there were two or three stories of photo tampering: from memory, one hotly debated case concerned athlete's tattoos that may or may not have been airbrushed.

I then come to a tedious piece on pre-caucus bickering in Iowa, which is illustrated by photos of the bickerers, John Kerry looking like he's just flown non-stop round the world twice, and a spruce and spry John Edwards.

The photos are laid out such that, from the reader's viewpoint, Kerry is looking right, and Edwards looking left. The backgrounds indicate that the pics were taken on different occasions.

Was one of them flipped, to get the phoney confrontation? Does it matter?
