HL Mencken defines journalism
A 1924 Mencken quote from one of the many pieces on Stephen Glass and Shattered Glass and related hype and hoopla:
Journalism, to a considerable degree, has ceased to be the profession of intelligent, idealistic and charming gentlemen. It has become the profession of public office seekers, title hunters, social pushers, dollar diddlers, mountebanks and cads.

intelligent, idealistic and charming gentlemenI wonder?
